This website hosts the confessions of a post-emerging reformissional evangelical, Alex S. Leung. The goal is to respond to the postmodern evangelical accommodation in a manner that is shaped by the Cross of Christ.
The mission of Cruciformity ✙ is edification of the body of Christ to the glory of God. To that end, through our articles, we seek to proclaim Him, “warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me” (Colossians 1:28-29).
Articles are published for your personal edification because the author has been called by the Lord to speak in Christ and confront evangelical accommodation in these postmodern times. “As men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:17)
“Cruciformity” -noun. (cruciform + conformity)
- conformity to the cruciform: the cross of Jesus Christ;
- behavior in accord with Christian standards, attitudes, practices, etc.;
- correspondence in form, nature, or character to Cross;
- compliance or acquiescence; obedience to live a life worthy of the Grace which we have received;
- agreement, congruity, or accordance with the beautiful news of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in the penal substitutionary atonement that Christ provided when he suffered and died on the Cross for our sins.
Our lives are shaped by the images that surround us. Each one sends a different message about life—what it means to be a “real” man or woman, what a “satisfying” relationship is like, what success looks like, or how “good” parents act, just to name a few. In a real way, we become the images we behold.
At the heart of the gospel lies the message that we look to all the wrong things in life. We allow all kinds of images to shape us that, instead of breathing life into us, steal it away. So, how do we find that illusory real life?
In the gospel, real life is found through an image of death – the cross of Jesus Christ. In other words, if we want to live, our lives must be shaped by the cross. Cruciformity is the way to life.
“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed (συμμόρφους) to the image (εἰκόνος) of his Son , in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”
–Romans 8:29“Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image (εἰκόνα) of the man of heaven.”
–1 Corinthians 15:49“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding [reflecting] the glory of the Lord, are being transformed (μεταμορφοθμεθα) into the same image (εἰκόνα) from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
–2 Corinthians 3:18“Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him (ὅμοιοι αὐτῷ ἐσόμεθα), because we shall see him as he is.”
–1 John 3:2
